Growth Under Pressure: The Impact of Academic Stress on Students

By Alpana Pillai

Academic success is often considered as the pathway towards a prosperous future. However, the increasing amount of pressure placed onto students to perform well in examinations, excel in extracurriculars, and balance numerous other responsibilities has made academic stress a major concern for students around the world.

While it remains true that for certain students, small portions of academic pressure can help improve their performance by acting as motivation, exceeding amounts are often linked to mental, physical and other health concerns. Due to this, it is important to understand what causes academic stress, and how to manage it to create a supportive environment for students.

Causes of Academic Stress

Between stress from assessments and pressure from the people around you, anxiety and tension become routine in students' lives. As academic stress remains one of the largest growing concerns for students globally, there exists multiple factors that influence this pressure.

These situations can heavily burden students, and while it does affect their stress levels within the classroom, the burden extends far beyond.

Impact of Academic Stress

Academic stress is often an overlooked burden that students face, yet it impacts not just their mental but also physical health. As pressure builds, many students cannot separate academics from their personal lives. Understanding these impacts is crucial to examine how academic pressure has become a source of harm rather than motivation.

Mental:

Mental health is one of the most greatly affected parts of a child’s life when it comes to academic stress. The high levels of stress students experience due to academic performance is linked with feelings of inadequacy, hopelessness, and overwhelming emotions. These feelings are key symptoms of anxiety and depression. In severe cases of academic stress, the impact on mental health is more extreme. Research has found connections between academic stress and depression and an increased risk of suicidal ideation. The burnout that students tend to feel leaves them mentally drained. Other mental health studies have shown that students facing academic stress often fall into stages of isolation. Numerous studies and resources show that the impact of academic stress on one’s mental health is often detrimental to a student's wellbeing.

Physical:

Academic stress doesn’t simply exhaust the mind, it also leads to physical symptoms. The constant strain can manifest through various physical symptoms:

The physical effects of academic stress are often overlooked, yet they are crucial to a person's wellbeing. Issues like fatigue, headaches and more make it increasingly difficult for students to perform at their best. As academic pressure continues to rise, it is important to understand that the maintenance of physical health is as important as academic success.

Management and Support

Students facing academic stress are often placed under immense pressure, it's imperative for their support system to use methods of stress relief to help them manage periods of high academic rigour in their academic year.

Techniques to Support Students:

Academic stress has become a common challenge for students, and affects far more than just their performance in classrooms. While certain amounts of pressure can encourage performance it is important to remember the line is thin. Excessive stress can negatively impact mental and physical health. Through support, academic pressure can be managed while maintaining performance. Success in academics should never come at the cost of health, and supporting students through this pressure ensures the youth of today and tomorrow lead positive lives.
